Description

This well known city landmark, designed by the famed architect Ernest Coxhead, was built as the Telephone Building in 1908. It is one of the city's great architectural statements. A steel, concrete, and brick building, it has a handsome neo Renaissance facade, with two pairs of giant Corinthian columns in antis supporting a huge entablature of several cornices with prominent modillions. The two-story base has a two-story arched central doorway with a bold broken scroll pediment, flanked by balconies. Architects generally consider this Coxhead's best commercial building.

The Landmark was completely renovated in 2009 & 2004 with 39 apartments constructed on five floors. The ground and second floors will be used for retail or commercial. This apartment has a large living/dining room, one bedroom, a smaller room ideal for an office, full bath, and good kitchen. The kitchen has cherry wood cabinets, grey granite tops, and stainless appliances. The bathroom has a glass tile shower surround and a limestone floor. All exterior walls are sandblasted brick and there are high ceilings. There is a washer and dryer adjacent to the bathroom.

This lovely apartment has all the best qualities of a loft with the conveniences of an apartment; high quality design (and finishes) throughout, and the major rooms are very bright from the many large, dramatic, round headed windows. There is a large common roof deck, nicely landscaped, with dramatic city views. Leased parking is half a block away (Sutter St) at $275/month. The front desk is manned from 6 to 6, seven days a week, and the building has professional management.

Neighborhood

This handsome block of Grant Avenue is just outside the often photographed Grant Avenue Chinatown gate, between the Financial District and Downtown. It is adjacent to upscale retail, restaurants, and well served by public transportation. In a city of microclimates, the weather here ranks among the best with relatively little summer fog.
