Description
This handsome Arts and Crafts style building, designed by George Applegarth, noted San Francisco architect, was built in 1909, and located on a lovely relatively unknown cul-de-sac pedestrian block north of Lake Street. The façade, with its distinctive pebble dash stucco so popular in that era, and red tile roof trim, still has the original doors and fenestration. The building was built as townhouses with one later converted into two apartments. This apartment is one of those, but has no one overhead.
A short flight of interior stairs leads to a three room apartment that overlooks a truly beautiful garden and wooded space. There is a living room with fireplace, remodeled kitchen with Euro cabinets and birch countertops, large bedroom, and full bath. The apartment is flooded with light all day. There is oak flooring, most of the original detailing remains, and there is electric baseboard heat. There is a central boiler for the entire building and much of the electrical and plumbing systems have been updated. This apartment uses the coin operated washer and dryer located in the basement, and there is an exclusive use storage room. There is no garage for this unit but street parking is usually available nearby.
The setting for this wonderful apartment is magical. Walk up a set of broad concrete steps from Lake Street, and enter a huge beautifully landscaped garden. The property owners on that first block of Third Avenue have landscaped and care for the garden, that is actually on the Third Avenue right of way. Very few people are aware of this park, and fewer still will ever get to live on it.
Area
Inner Lake Street is a wonderful family neighborhood that has long had a special cachet. The area is noted for its handsome architecture, large trees and the Mountain Lake children's playground. Good shopping and restaurants are available nearby at the Laurel Shopping Center and on Clement Street. There is excellent public transportation on California Street, with express service to the financial district.
